Surf Breaks in Hacienda Iguana

Colorados
Is a fast, tubing beach break generally with many peaks and A framing waves. With larger, long period swells it can be a very heavy wave. Generally best around mid to high tide but it changes with every swell. Low tide is surfable but is just generally a faster, barreling wave. Best for intermediate to expert surfers but can offer some fun waves for beginners in low surf season (October to March). Will hold most size waves up to around double overhead.

Panga Drops
Is a horse-shoe shaped rock/reef break that offers tapering lefts and rights with a mellow take off and a more vertical inside section.  This break can be good for long boarders or short boarders. This break amplifies swells and usually bigger than Colorados but softer.  Usually best from low to mid tide but there are some inside sections that break at a high tide.  Can be good for all ability levels, depending on the swell size.

Los Perros Point
Located at the very north point of Hacienda Iguana. This is a fickle right point break that only breaks with large swells.

Breaks Outside of Hacienda Iguana

To the South in Order of Proximity

Amarillo
Amarillo beach is the next beach south of Hacienda Iguana and there surfable peaks on the north and south end of the beach, although the south end is more popular and consistent. You can to the south end of Amarillo in about 40 minutes or drive there in 25 minutes.  It’s a beach break with fun waves, generally half the size of Colorados.  Best at mid to high tide.  Good for all ability levels.

Gigantic
Gigante is the bay just south of Amarillo. The swell has to be huge for Gigante to break at it’s south or north ends, but it is a good option when everywhere else is too big.  Good for all ability levels.

Manzanillo
Manzanillo is a left point break with a rock bottom that needs a little bit of swell to break.  Breaks best with a SW swell.  Ideal tide is mid to high tide as it is generally too shallow at a low tide.  Good for intermediate to expert surfers. Only accessible by boat, approximately 30 minutes from Iguana.

To the North in Order of Proximity

Playa Rosada
Left point break located within the gated community of Rancho Santana. This break needs a decent size swell to work and is best at a mid to high tide. Good for all ability levels. Only accessible by boat or if you are staying in Rancho Santana.

Rancho Santana
Wedgy beach break with multiple peaks located on the north end of the gated community of Rancho Santana. Best at a mid to high tide and with small to medium sized swells. Good for intermediate to expert surfers. This break can be quite crowded but does offer many peaks. Accessible by boat or car.

Waikikis
Beach/rock break located just to the north of Magnific Rock. Needs a large swell to break. Best at a mid to high tide. Best beginner break in the area as it is a very soft and forgiving wave. Accessible by boat or car.

Popoyo
Reef/rock break with a more predominant left but also a right that works. One of the most consistent waves in the area. Good for intermediate to expert surfers.  Works with all tides and swell sizes. Accessible by boat or car.

Lance’s Left
200-300 yard left point break (rock/reef) on the north end of Astillero’s bay in front of a huge cliff face that often blocks strong offshore winds. Good at all tides. Lance’s left is a softer, more forgiving point break that is fun for all ability levels. This break can hold all size swells. This break is accessible by boat or car but by car you will still have to walk about 15 minutes and will have to walk out on the reef to paddle out.

Playgrounds
A rippable cobble stone rock/reef break with a predominant left but often good short rights as well. Generally best on a mid tide but varies by swell. Best on a S/SW swell. Good for intermediate to expert surfers and can hold waves well overhead. Only accessible by boat, approximately 1-1.5 hours from Iguana.
